How do you know if a guy really cares about you?

How do i know if my boyfriend sincerely cares about me?? He has been abusive towards me because I smoked behind his back and lied a couple of times for stupid reasons and he let all tht p and was still with me. But the icing on the cake; I really think this guy is the most perfect guy in the whole entire world, hes sweet and affectionate when hes in a good mood. He sees me everything and he would never everrrrrrrrrrr cheat on me but recently we had a fight and my brother got scared and he called the police. I told him to leave cuz i didnt want him to get in trouble. But when the police came they asked what happeend i said nothing then out of nowhere i decided to tell them what happened before ( when he caught me smoking he beat the crap out of me and called one day threatheing to kill me) as well as i gave them the recording of him threathening me. I feel i love him but he says i dont since i "betrayed" him. It is betrayal in my book too and i feel SO HORRIBLE about the whole thing. Going in and making a video statement and hes going to see it in two weeks:( I really feel this is the end. What does anyone think about this situation? This guy would do anything for me i believe but he abused me and put me down and made me feel like dirt and its because of his anger problems and i accepted him anger and all. But the action of turning him in does this really mean I dont love him and dnt care? Am i just lying to myself?
