When the French and the Spaniards arrived in America, was it the first time they encountered alligators?

Yes. The American Alligator is only found in Southeastern United States. The Chinese Alligator is only found in China. Unless they traveled to China prior to arriving in America (unsure), then it was definately their first time seeing Alligators.
